Titan may be as dry as a bone

Quote:
Saturn's moon Titan is as dry as a bone over most of its surface, suggest new infrared images from Earth.

The work supports similar observations from the Cassini spacecraft, in orbit around the Ringed Planet. And it suggests previous radar studies from the ground - which hinted the giant moon was covered in liquid methane seas - were actually detecting signs of liquid that had long since vanished.

Darn,

I was just preparing to post this item here, you're living up to your BABB reputation here as well.

So, what do you make of this, the expectations were hydrocarbon oceans, after Huygens is war rain, next it was drying rivers and lakes, now it is one possible lake and volcanism, maybe. Seems they're running out of options, maybe it's life, just like on Mars, as some speculate?
Or none of the above, and is Titan's atmosphere not in equilibrium.

Cheers.

Saturn moon Titan 'dry as a bone'

There was always the risk that we were 'imagining earth-like scenarios for Titan...'

Perhaps it is methane 'snow' rather than methane 'rain'?

Aww. Disappointing- I hope Europa has liquid water below the ice. It would be real disappointing if that hypothesis is spoiled, too.

I think the evidence for liquid is a bit stronger for Europa - it might be just water slush, of course, so we're hoping for a carbon-sulfur-rich core about 100km below the surface (the general density allows for that, I think) which might warm up enough for some 'black smokers'...h34r:

We could still go skiing on Titan, and the lodge would have a great roaring fire...

lol our oxygen would be the fire as the roles would be reversed
oxygen burning in a methane air.

i can imagine a methane breathing alien coming to earth and exhaling fire when ever he got near a cigarette smoker

My apologies, ToSeek, I didn't realise you'd already posted this one here (and I thought I'd checked, too.. )
How can I feed my (belated) thread into yours?
Seems to be that's where it belongs...

thank you, Josh; you're a champion!

an idea for your next robot, perhaps, piersdad? h34r:

This latest Titan finding does point out that even the best experts, with access to the best material on the day, can be tempted to dream/conjecture/'apply earth-like scenarios'...but, it also highlights how quick they are to admit that new evidence forces a change of thinking...it happened with Venus, with Mars, now with Titan...that's why I try not to wave the 'conspiracy!' banner every time my dream/conjecture/imagination gets shattered...
