Default Schools with astronomy degrees in the Northeast area of the US...

Alright... I've wanted to get into weather or astronomy for a very long time as my academic majors. What I'm asking is if anyone knows any colleges in the New Jersey or Pennsylvania area (even New York) that has Astronomy or Atmospheric Sciences programs.

Also, what is the difference between Astronomy and Astrophysics? If I go into Astronomy, I want to go in with a strong concentration on Cosmology.

I have been researching on my own, too, but I'm just seeing if anyone else has any other opinions or information. Any information is useful.

I wouldn't really care much about a distinction between an astrophysics and an astronomy degree: they're the same thing at the undergrad level anyway and not much of one at the graduate level even. Heck, some would say the Astrophysics people have more association with cosmology!
That having been said, onto the colleges (if you had any specifications it would help, but ah well). Let's see here...
Princeton
University of Pennsylvania
Haverford College
Swarthmore College
Penn State
University of Pittsburgh
Cornell University
Columbia University
Yes, I realize it's quite a broad list but not knowing what you're interested in it should be a good starting point. Hope it helps!

I'm interested in Astronomy with a concentration in Cosmology and that's around NJ/PA/NY.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Alright, but I meant more what you were wanting in a college other than the quality of the program as there's a far cry between, say, Liberal Arts Colleges and State Schools. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Oh... I don't care if it's a state or Liberal Arts school as long as it's affordable and that the program is quality and not something that would be laughed at if I put it on an application.

Here are some good atmospheric sciences schools:
- Cornell U., Ithaca, NY (my alma mater )
- Millersville U., Millersville, PA
- Rutgers U., central NJ (one of the Brunswicks, sorry, can't remember which)
- Penn State U., State College, PA
- SUNY-Albany

If you're interested in both Astronomy and Atmos. Science, then I suggest a school which offers courses in atmospheric physics, upper-atomsphere studies (ionosphere/stratosphere), atmospheric chemistry, and climate change/paleoclimatology. Happy school hunting!
