Try as I might, I have never actually seen the nebula. There are plenty of pictures to prove it exists, but no eyepiece of mine can resolve it.
I realize binoculars probably have a better chance due to the angular size, but man, I'm growing weary of looking.

Would probably help if I lived in the northern hemisphere.

I've seen it more than once with the naked eye while out in Arizona. I don't know if a telescope will show it, in all honesty, as it is HUGE and would possibly be too large and diffuse to make out at all! Binocs could probably do the trick.

I've seen it many times from dark sites using both binoculars and filtered rich-field telescopes. My 101mm f/5.4 Tele Vue refractor, when equipped with a narrowband or OIII filter and a 35mm Tele Vue Panoptic (4.4 degree TFOV), does a nice job of revealing NGC 7000. BTW, this nebula's name is actually the North America Nebula.
A photo of NGC 7000 that I took at Cherry Springs State Park earlier this month is posted at NGC 7000 (the North America Nebula) from CSSP, 2005/09/05 Dave Mitsky

that is an amazing picture. There seem to be many more start in that field than in other photos I've seen.
I understand needing to be far from distant light. I've only seen Andromeda a few times and the Perseid Double cluster a few more than that.
