I agree with you entirely, but then again this is nothing new. Whenever there is a major event of some kind a plethora of jokes is never far behind. 9/11 had its far share, along with all the assortment of racist, sexist and any other (insert word here)-ist jokes you can think of.
Problem is most people have become desensitised to a lot of the (bad word) that happens in the world and don't feel bad at laughing at it. However there is a time and a place for humour, even if it is not deliberate, such as the CNN screw ups that enabled me to have a laugh amidst the shock of the Columbia disaster. Sometimes, you have to laugh just so you don't go mad. How old are you glom anyway? Sixth former? Sorry showing my age, year 12-13? |

well, if you want something tastless, but that's at least clever, go to http://www.somethingawful.com's latest edition of "Photoshop phridays". among this weeks crop of images is one that may explain a few things.
I'd directly post that image here, but 1) it is rather tastless, and 2) they have some truly evil coding that punishes you rather harshly for direct linking their images (this is a warning, not a challenge. if you try it you WILL be sorry! I know I was after I made that mistake on another board) and don't go there unless you have a sufficiently twisted, geeky, and arcane sense of humor. |

The one with Einstein is pretty good, and the next thread with the crazy foods is hilarious. I was laughing my ___ off for a while. Edit: Oh lord, I just found the Normal Books for Sci-Fi Audiences thread. This one has them all beat! Got your guide to owning a tribble yet? okay, I just clicked the link to the old thread, only to find out it was a FARK PS contest. that is why it sucked
fark and SA actually have a longstanding rivalry going, and while fark may offer the second best PS contests on the net, the skill level and quality of humor is lightyears behind the SA "goons"! when I first discovered Photoshop Phridays I wanted to join in all the fun, but it turns out that you have to pay a one time fee of ten bucks to join their forums (a concept I reject on principle), so I went to fark instead. it wasn't structured enough, and there was an extreme lack of talent there, so I just couldn't bring myself to sink so low. |

I agree, Glom. I've never been one to enjoy these types of jokes. The "Need Another Seven Astronauts" joke was made after Challenger, and I didn't find it funny then, nor any of the others that passed for adolescent humor.

[Psychoanalyst] Some people have a hard time facing pain, so they opt for "hardening their hearts" and laughing about it. [/Psychoanalyst]
Immaturity runs deep.

If so, there might actually have been a time when it was funny.
I can appreciate dark humor, but when a joke has been overused it grows dull and then it becomes worse than a bad joke. It no longer simply ceases to be funny and becomes actively annoying. It grates on the consciousness with its painful, excruciating un-funniness, made worse by the fact that the teller implicitly thinks they are terribly clever to be repeating it. It's worse still when the joke is of such questionable taste. |

A few days after the Columbia crash a friend and I were discussing how the worse the disaster the longer it takes for the jokes to start. We discussed how months after the Challanger crash nobody made jokes. Even national media and comedians mentioned it, comparing it to how you even now still can't make jokes about Lincoln.
So we decided to make up the first jokes about Columbia. Just put them together out of basic english writing class technique. We made up a small handfull. We both decided this was the best: What do cows and astronauts have in common? You can find them all over Texas. We made up a couple more regarding things like Texas barbeques and even threw in George Bush. It's like when you are injured you can't touch the injury but when it's healing it kind of feels good to scrach it, I think that being able to laugh at it is a sign of healing. |

No, SAMU, there are things in this life that should never become laughing matters. Death is one of them. Life is too sacred. Think of it this way, if someone you loved died in a horrible accident, would you make such jokes about it? Or would you appreciate others laughing about it? I sure wouldn't - and I'd be very tempted to wipe that stupid grin off their faces the hard way.

nebularain,
On the contrary, death is one of the most common subjects for humor. As has been writen before for thousands of years, "We laugh because it hurts." Think of humor, from Three Stooges pratfalls to racial jokes, someone is hurt or humiliated. It's no fun to break it down like that but it's true. While it's true that scraching an injury can reopen it, sometimes if the wound closes too soon it can fester and has to be reopened to clean the infection. |
