If you go to this site and click on:

"Awesome Full Comet Passage C3 MPEG"

you will see a video of the comet's passage through the SOHO image in its entirety. It's pretty cool!

It also kills any conspiracy theory of "cut and paste" photos.

And chivis, as another poster pointed out earlier, the employees of Goddard, who handle this data and its placement on the web, were hampered by a severe snow storm which kept most of them from being able to come into work for a few days during this time period.

Here's a image that comes from Italy "Col
Druscie Observatory".

I don't read Italian, but I am able to figure out a couple of words from this short report.

"L'elaborazione con(with?)filtro(filter)
Larson-Sekonina evidenzia (Evidence) una
seconda(Second) coda (Coma)......on & on.

From that, I think they are reporting & observng a second coma in Comet V1.

Check out the image, ZOOM-IN closly..

http://aac.sunrise.it/comete/2002V1-030123ds.jpg

If someone can translate the Italian astronomer
report to english, be very greatful.

Some people are saying that the images have been doctored: that's trash (to put it nicely). If they had been doctored, you certainly wouldn't have the mistakes that conspiracy theorists picked up on. It would be alot more than a Paint cut and paste job. They would be checked for accuracy before posted. Having this error on the picture when it was posted just proves the photos have not been doctored in any way at all. Not even the Government is stupid enough to post a doctored image that has an obvious error on it.

According to the chart that plots the comets progress around the sun, the comet in the photos followed the path exactly. It is stupid to believe it might be heading towards us. For a start, if it was knocked off course by a flare, logic dictates that it would be heading in the general direction of the CME. Believing it is heading towards Earth is very naieve. If it was knocked off course (which it wasn't) there would be only the smallest possible chance of it even coming in our vague direction, and even then it has to hit a moving target. Also, we must remember that scientists have been studying this comet since early November 2002, before the comet flared up to this emmense size. They have a much more accurate idea of the size. (Notice from one of the links Orlando kindly posted that the comet has not shrunk to 2 times the size of pluto, not Jupiter!!!). Magic comet!

It basically means that using the Larson-Sekanina filter, there is evidence of a second 'powder tail being developed a little over the Ionian one. Then, in brackets it says something to do with the sum of 8 to 23rd January images, an elaboration by AstroArt di M.Migliardi.

I think that's about it. Some correct me if I'm mistaken. My Italian is not brilliant.

Well, I personally think the size of the tale shows that it is mainly ice. It certainly put on a beautiful light show, proving that something was reacting like mad. I can't think what else would do this. Any ideas? I'm still sold on it being a big ol' ice ball!

Well, for one....Hubble images were withheld becuase it would of proved that a Planet X object is possible. Comets are building planets....but dont take my word for it...

The truth will be know soon enough.

Can I ask, without seeming rude, where does this information come from? Have the with-held pictures been leaked? Have you seen the with-held pictures? Or is this a matter of taking someones word for it.

If the pictures were leaked I would have posted them here myself. if you add up all the BS that has been going on with NASA and the US gov't, you can rest assured that the wool is being pulled over our eyes.

You guys actually think that gov'ts are being completely honest with us? I think not....Ever since Roswell, the gov't has been keeping the truth from us....The "powers that be" will ONLY tell us what they want us to know.

Okay, how many people on this board have imaged comets? How many can use multiplie images to calculate orbits? I bet even a few have access to equipment that can take spectra of comets.

Now, Chivis, can you do any of these things? If you have done them, show us your data. If you have not done them, there are many people who would be willing to help you learn...many of whom don't even work for the government

If all you have is suppressed info that no one can see, you won't be taken seriously here. On the other hand, this board is filled with skeptics. If you have some good info, it will be put through a lot of tests and discussions to see if it stands up. That's the way science works.

For instance, I tracked the comet before it got too close to the Sun to observe. I can testify that it was following the predicted orbit. I know the density of the solar wind is on the order of a few protons per cubic meter and I know the range of speeds of the solar wind. I can look up the density and speed of a cornonal mass ejection and calculate its effect on a comet (negligible!)

These are some of the things I can do to check the "official" information you so distrust, and I am not the smartest person on this board! Show us what you have done to check.

Rob

And while you're at it, would you like to start with one or two specific claims? "The Gov't is lying to us" is not very helpful.

For example, how about elaborating on your claim that Hubble imagery was somehow censored to keep evidence for "Planet X" from us? Who censored it? (More specific than just "NASA"). What exactly do you mean by "Planet X"? When were these alleged pictures taken, and why would they show something that should be suppressed?

Welcome to the board, but you'll find that just coming on and making vague conspiracy allegations won't win you many points with this crowd...

Greetings, Colleagues.

I'm gratified to find a bulletin board that discusses astronomy as astronomy and not as a mishmash of Secret Plots by The Little Purple Men From Arcturus Aided By The Powers That Be in NASA.

I have recently come from just such a forum; anyone with a science or engineering background is shouted down as a spy for the CIA if his comments disagree with the current fantasy-of-the-month -- or even if he merely asks for evidence.

I am not an astronomer by any means, although I do lug around an old but serviceable 8" SC. I'm looking forward to being around coherent people, and I intend to pick everyone's brains at every opportunity

Well, I'm impressed.

If you want to show your superior knowledge, trying advancing some interesting claim on this board - minus the profanity and attitude.

P.S. It's not polite to introduce yourself by yelling at people. FTR, I'm over 16 and pretty sure my IQ is over 80, too.

NIMRUTH, are we talking the forum that has such intelligent threads as:

"Which Dick do you like best? "
"Married people have stopped f***ing"
"Anyone watch the Grammys?"
"Need Fashion Advice Mr. Lucky", and my personal favourite
"Should we be fighting the Reptiles at all?"

You seem desperate to believe the stuff that goes on over there that you resort to swearing at us. Do we go over to your forum and swear at you? Nope. You will find we are most civil to your over here, but the Godlike Productions forum will swear and cuss you until you decide to leave.

We are not NASA disinfo agents. We are like-minded people who want to discuss real astronomy. You enjoy talking of conspiracy theories, we enjoy talking astronomy. Get it? You do not need to come here, we do not need to go to your forum. Get it?

Indeed there are kids on this forum; kids who want to find out about astronomy without being scared by your 'end of world' scenarios. There are adults on this forum who want to discuss orbital dynamics... This is a place for all minds, rather than the narrow mindedness of believing the Government lies about everything. Dude, go outside, take a deep breath. Look around. You realise how easy it is to get worked up in front of a computer screen.

Now, please refrain from swearing on this forum anymore. This is a family forum. Just by bringing age into this matter shows that you are immature yourself. Hey, I wish I was 16 again but I'm not. Maybe if I was 16, I'd be chatting over at the Godlike Forums, eh?

Welcome to the board Duncan!! We look forward to hearing what you have to contribute. There are a lot of bright people here and I'm sure you will learn a lot. Please disregard the two trolls, NIMRUTH and chivis, who I'm sure will be banned soon.
