Default Brian May Replaces Guitar with Telescope

Queen guitarist joins Sir Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott to write "the complete history of the universe"

Quote:
May, 58, who abandoned his astronomy PhD when Queen hit the charts in the mid-1970s, has named the book Bang! The Complete History of the Universe, after the Big Bang from which the universe is thought to have originated...

While working on the book, May has told senior astrophysicists he wants to complete his thesis and has persuaded them to assess it.
A major factor in that success was a research paper he published in 1974, entitled An Investigation of the Motion of Zodiacal Dust Particles, which remains a widely cited work.
An investigation of the motion of zodiacal dust particles

Talented guy.

I can't find where (darn search function) but Brian May has been discussed here before...and it was not in a "favorable light".

Fact is that Brian has some very strange ideas concerning what is and what isn't scientific fact.

...and for the life of me I can't find that thread.

Perhaps some "kind soul" will take pity and search/find what I am talking about?? I believe it was within the last year...or 2.

The thread in question is Dr. Brian May CBE 'outraged by Deep Impact Comet Mission

And for a good laugh, check out my update of a Queen song, Bohemian Rhapsody 2005, in that thread.

Thanks, Celestial Mechanic...what did that take you, about 2 minutes to find??

After re-reading that, I "believe" that I may (pun intended) have been a little too hard on Brian. He's "slightly bent" not completely deranged.

I'd be interested to see if any of his "personal opinions" are reflected in this book.

Just preface your Google search terms with: "site:www.bautforum.com".

Ah, now you've done it. Off and killed a minor cultural phenomenon around here.

I've not tried searching for the thread, but I suspect it may have been these entries on his blog that were being discussed:-

http://www.brianmay.com/brian/brians...bjun05.html#29

He was none to happy about the idea of crashing a probe into a comet and causng such wanton vandalism ......

Which, er, celestrial mechanic has already pointed out

Rock musician Brian May yesterday criticised the light pollution that is drowning out the stars over Britain.

Guitarist Brian, of Queen, was replying to a question from Skymania News as he launched his latest epic, a book on astronomy.

Brian May is a great guy. But I feel a little uncomfortable when I hear him saying things like "astronomy is a spiritual quest...". Sounds a bit astrological [or worse, religious] to me.

I wouldn't read too much into it without more context. Even I'd only be able to describe being able to see Earth from orbit as something approaching a religious experience.

The intent is more metaphorical than dogmatic.

That´s true. But I for one generally express my love, amazement and enthusiasm for astronomy in less spiritual terms... But then he´s also an artist [and perchance a poet] so...
