As seen on TV ! As seen on CNN !

Wonder if they give a nifty certificate that you can frame and hang on the wall? And what's the difference between being "seen on TV" and being "seen on CNN"?

Is it time for the BA to do another exposé like his one about the International Star Registry? (look for the paragraphs beginning "Selling Stars")

"As seen on CNN" may only mean that a tongue in cheek story was done on this scam, or even that it was advertised at 3:00 a.m. on CNN. Sheesh.

That's almost as funny as those ads offering to name a star after you. (One of my aunts actually fell for this.)

Personally, I would prefer to name something in the sky which is really important after myself. I would not need to pay any of the astronomical-object-naming companies for this. I could make up my own fancy certificates and would only need to pay for the supplies and do the work. I could make them of a number of objects for every month, or holiday, or whatever...

Don't think small, THINK BIG!.

ljbrs,
I thought you had already renamed the star formerly known as Polaris.

Oh, I want lots and lots of celestial objects renamed after me. Then I can spend the rest of my leisure time attempting to locate them with my telescope. Of course, I need to find objects visible throughout the year. Perhaps, to be safe, it might be helpful to select circumpolar objects. It beats paying a star-naming organization for the privilege. Also, selecting and renaming them myself clearly insures that the best ones are renamed in my honor.

On the other hand, it might be nice to name dark-matter objects after myself, instead. Then I would not need to make any attempt to find them, permitting me to use my beautiful telescope for more important celestial observing.

As long as they're not in Draco: I've already renamed them after myself (after all, the Conselation and I are both Dragons...)

edit: After a day of thought: since our claims are all equally valid, we can just all name the stars after ourselves and each other. Then when we get together to talk about them, we'll just point and gesture (after all, we'll each set up our own co-ordinate system to give our favorite stars good, easily remembed co-ordinate locations
