Default The Big One

Wonderful Japanese Video Depicting what it would be like for Earth to receive Lucifer's Hammer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYgEw...elated&search=

Redubbed in music so you can actually enjoy (?) the video.

If we halt the ISS, all versions of Ares, and transport Orion and Altair aboard DIRECTv3's Jupiter family of Shuttle-Derived Launch Vehicles, we just might make it back to the Moon by 2020.

Well, well... the asteroid depicted has at least the size of Vesta... I doubt that even an asteroid that big would have these kind of consequences...

I love this video. But why is it glowing before it hits the Earth? That ruins it for me.

Well... like I said in another thread, the real estate would still be there... it wouldn't do us much good though...

Great video, and superb camera work. But imagine the mega protective force field that camera had to have! :-)

- Energy needed to boil away earths oceans (1.4 billion cubic kilometers of water at 15°C): ~3.7 * 10^27 Joule.
- Kinetic energy of a Vesta-sized impactor (500 km diameter, 3 g/cm^3) at 20 km/s: ~3.9 * 10^28 Joule.

Factor 10, ok, but you still have to melt the crust, build up those fantastic ejecta walls and so on...

Here are two scenarios here, given such a large size object wended it way over here, which could be useful for a sci-fi plot.

1) The body wipes everything out as depicted in the movie, however by this time there is a permenant moon base with males and females, working to be independent from Earth. Could that be done from what we know is on the Moon and would there be serious fallout from the hit that would wipe out any moon base.

2) The body does not hit, but thanks to the Moon some how it becomes a captured second moon. Is there a trajectory that such an object could come along where that would happen.
