I suppose the IAU next will consider Pluto to be 3/5 of a planet for census purposes.

I think you guys are missing the point somewhat.

I agree that the definition definitely needs to be refined in future, but part 3 of the definition reads,

By their own definition:
(3) It must reign supreme in its own orbit, having "cleared the neighborhood" of other competing bodies.

Can anyone seriously argue that any of the Earth crossing asteroids, any of the objects that cross the orbit of Jupiter, or any of the plutinos are competing bodies? Come on, there is no way in the world you could argue that point - but, I do agree that it needs to be worked out what comprises a competing body, how to define double planets, triple planets, many things - despite those future steps to take, I think the decision taken is a step in the right direction.

Well, they should have first decided what "clear" meant before using it as a criteria to define something else. if they had done that then maybe they would not have had to grandfather the eight "Classical Planets" by special exemption.

Hi, people. New here. Found this site because I was interested in the planet debate.

Although the IAU haven't defined exactly what they mean by 'cleared the neighbourhood of its orbit', it is a necessary criteria for an object in the solar system to be a planet and that also by the IAU definition there are eight planets (note, not at least eight, or eight known - exactly eight) in the solar system.

To be internally self-consistent, whatever is the exact meaning of 'cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit' in the IAU definition, applying that meaning has to result in Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune having cleared the neighbourhood around their orbits. So, only meanings of 'cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit' that have that result can be valid!

It might be the case that no-one will be able to come up with a definition of 'cleared the neighbourhood arounds its orbit' that means that those eight objects have done so. In which case the IAU definition is internally self-contradictory, and the IAU will have to go back to the drawing board!

I don't know wht the IAU even attempted to define what a planet is.

They should have just defined a planet as whatever they deem to be a planet.

They are Gods, you know.

I disagree... let me explain.

The "cleared the neighboorhood" argument is basically the "orbital dominance" scheme that I and many others in this forum have been proposing for a long time.

However, there is an exception to be made regarding small bodies in an orbital resonance. Neptune has effectively cleared its orbit by gravitationally forcing Pluto and other nearby objects in the Kuiper Belt into a specific orbital resonance. Those that did not reach a resonance were ejected (cleared) from Neptune's orbital region.

There are other examples... There are large "Trojans" in Jupiter's orbit, but they are stable only because they are either 60 degrees ahead or behind Jupiter.

Moons around each planet are another example.

Every one of the 8 "classical" planets contains AT LEAST 98% of the mass of all of the bodies in its orbital region. That seems pretty "clear" to me.

Earth, with its large impact-formed moon, is the straggler at 98%. I believe the other 7 planets are over 99.9%.

IANAA, but when I read the "clear" requirement, I assumed it meant the planet's path to be cleared of any objects it was likely to collide with, not trojan objects, moons or anything that resonates in a manner prohibiting collusions. If that is the case, wouldn't it be a clean definition of a planet?

Strangely, all the oblects in 2:3 resonant orbits with Neptune actually get closer to Uranus than they ever do to Neptune, because of the particulars of the orbits.

It's kinda wierd, but I did some simulating, and found it to be true...

My point was that the IAU's 3rd part of the definition is too vague. Doodler brought the point home even better than I imagined.

I hadn't thought of the orbital resonance as a form a "clearing out" the path -- that's a good point (and I guess I need to read alot more posts/threads in the future).

So, Neptune can stay, but Jupiter has to go. :lol

Ahh, but driving in a busy street and not hitting anyone would be similar to resonance, however a busy street would not be similar to clear.

The Trojans are in an orbital resonance, though: it just happens to be 1:1.
Jupiter has cleared all matter that recurrently passes close to it: some it has perturbed away, some it has tidied into resonances, including the Trojans.

I said this in one of the other threads, but the Earth clearly hasn't cleared it's orbit. It regularly intercepts the orbit of another planet mass body -- the Moon. Since the Moon is less orbiting the Earth than it is disturbing the Earth's orbit around the Sun, I don't think it should be cast aside in these discussions as simply a satellite.

Trojans be damned -- the Earth shouldn't be a planet because of the Moon.

Good point. When I read through that page by Mike Brown, I see some wording that makes me think that he is not entirely happy with the result of the vote. On the surface he comes across as supportive, but reading between the lines I sense otherwise.

Well, I guess no one is absolutely happy with the outcome, although the definition itself no doubt has lots of supporters (including me, if that counts). The resolution text itself is just plain horrible and requires too much explaining.

I think Mike Brown isn't happy because he haven't discovered a new planet, but as a scientists he very well know that accepting Pluto and 2003 UB313 could lead to an absurd¹ situation of a too large number of planets.

¹) Absurd for a layman, many astronomers and space enthusiasts of course wouldn't have had any problems accepting such situation.
