Default Big Bang Rattles NZ South Island

Shame it was down there and not a little north. Oh well. Here's the story.

A massive bang which rattled Christchurch just before three o'clock this afternoon seems to have been caused by a meteorite.

I was at my flat when the meteorite went over. The sonic boom rattled the windows; the first thing I thought was that a jet plane had passed overhead!

Is it just my peception or are there a lot of meteorites hitting the ground and getting noticed lately? There are what, 4 active threads dealing with impacts right now? Is this the normal rate and people are just talking about it more, or is this a rise in the number for seom reason?

The headline reads "Meteorite Wakes Up Christchurch", and the articles says it was at 3 in the afternoon? A little late for a siesta don't ya thin?

The article says local police think it was space junk re-entering, but the reports don't seem consistent with this. I've heard sonic booms from the Space Shuttle as it passed over San Francisco while de-orbiting. It sounded like fireworks in the distant. It made the neighborhood dogs bark.

They must have read my post. Now when you click that link, you get a slightly different article dated on the 13th, with the headline "Meteorite Reduced To Pebbles". The old article was dated the 9th.

Did anybody else *completely* misinterpret the thread title?

Hum,
Looks like someone found `something`.

A piece of 'space debris' found at a Dunsandel property last night will be handed over to staff from the National Radiation Laboratory this morning, Christchurch police said today.
Police said a police officer from Lincoln collected the item from a Canterbury farm last night and brought it into the police station around 9.30pm last night.

I saw an incredible meteor from my back porch Monday night. It was unlike anything I've ever seen. I logged on to the web a few minutes later to see if there were any news reports of meteors and saw the story about the meteor over New Zealand...my question is do you think it was the same one?

I live in the Western part of North Carolina...is it physically possible for me to have seen the same meteor? I curious because this "meteor" was very unique and it seemed to be burning a very green color. It streaked across the sky for what seemed like 5 or 6 seconds until my vision was blocked by the thick woods behind my house.

I've watched a few Perseid showers and this was absolutely the most spectacluar thing I've ever seen.

Is there anyone who is looking into this meteor over NZ that I should contact to give them my account of this?

I'd appreciate your feedback..I'm absoultely fasincated with this right now.

A piece of 'space debris' found at a Dunsandel property last night will be handed over to staff from the National Radiation Laboratory this morning, Christchurch police said today.

According to 3 News, they ruled out it being a meteorite but they didn't rule out it being Extraterrestrial Space Junk.
