A meteor was reported throughout the east coast region of New Zealand, prompting a flood of calls to emergency services.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a bright white trail in the sky with pieces breaking off. A meteorite is believed to have burned up over Canterbury region on Tuesday afternoon before slamming into the ground in a field. According to the Stardome Observatory in Auckland, the loud boom heard throughout the Canterbury region was most likely to be from a meteorite, up to the size of a medicine ball. Scientists rule out mystery object as meteorite
It looks like cross between a piece of volcanic foam and a hunk of West Coast coal, but scientists today ruled it out as a meteorite. National Radiation Laboratory scientists today pored over the 15cm by 7cm by 3.5cm grey-black object found in a Dunsandel paddock yesterday after a massive sonic boom above Canterbury. Read more

I saw an incredible meteor from my back porch Monday night. It was unlike anything I've ever seen. I logged on to the web a few minutes later to see if there were any news reports of meteors and saw the story about the meteor over New Zealand...my question is do you think it was the same one?
I live in the Western part of North Carolina...is it physically possible for me to have seen the same meteor? I curious because this "meteor" was very unique and it seemed to be burning a very green color. It streaked across the sky for what seemed like 5 or 6 seconds until my vision was blocked by the thick woods behind my house. I've watched a few Perseid showers and this was absolutely the most spectacluar thing I've ever seen. Is there anyone who is looking into this meteor over NZ that I should contact to give them my account of this? I'd appreciate your feedback..I'm absoultely fasincated with this right now. |

Hum,
Report your sighting of the 12th September Fireball (or email Jennie McCormick) HERE. (BTW tell her that you heard it was the SL-14 booster stage from the cosmos 1703 satellite burning up) PS. The local radio station is worth phoning too (they had a spot about it at the time)

@jdeans
Hum, after a bit of research i found that there was a report of an exceptionally bright (greater than mag 13) meteor at 22:52 , on the 11th September, over N Carolina, US. The meteor was heading in a west to northwest direction. (i just re-read your post and realised that you live in america - so you did not see the New Zealand meteor)

Are there any resources where I can find more info about this meteor over North Carolina? I'm really facisnated by this and would like to get more info.
Whatever I saw was really spectacular...not even close to the normal "shooting star". It was very bright and "burned" for a long time compared to any other thing I've seen. I'm obviously a novice at this but I've always been fascinated by meteors. I think whatever I saw was a once in a lifetime kind of experience...at least for me to see something like this at random. One more thing this meteor or whatever it was...seemed to have a green or blue color and a really long "tail". Thanks for any info...I'm glad I found this forum! Hum,
i cant find anything else... (except that it was described as blue green as well and that there was another reported green meteor slightly later over Philadelphia.) Best bet is to find the local astronomy group and see if they saw anything.
