Default Welcome, Eris!

The object previously known as 2003 UB313 and unofficially "Xena" is now officially named (136199) Eris. Its moon, "Gabrielle" is Dysnomia.

Hum,
It will be unofficially known as "Xena" for a long time to come.

Let us hope that will not happen.

Eris is the goddess of strife, and Dysnomia, her child, is anarchy and disobedience.

Eris is also the patron goddess of computer support.

From Wikipedia's Eris (mythology) page:

Quote:
She [Eris, Roman Discordia] also appeared on the television series "Hercules: the Legendary Journeys", and its spin-off, "Xena: Warrior Princess", under the name Discord.
So, the name is not that far from the cursed "Xena" after all...

Not to mention that Dysnomia is also the goddess of lawlessness.

That's great! Naming her after the goddess of discord! Was there ever a more appropriate name? I like to see that little planet as a shiny golden apple thrown amongst astronomers to set them on each other.

How ironically appropriate...

The satellite, now called Dysnomia, is named for Eris's daughter, the goddess of lawlessness — a tribute, says Brown, to the actress who played Xena, Warrior Princess: Lucy Lawless. But Brown is quick to point out that the moon also follows another tradition for "dwarf planet" satellite names: Pluto's moon Charon was discovered in 1978 by James W. Christy, and the first syllable in Charon matches the first syllable in Christy's wife's name, Charlene. Brown's wife's name is Diane.

"We're going to call the moon Di" - Michael E. Brown.

They're gonna be hosed if a single guy discovers a KBO with a moon, aren't they?

Eris has a moon. Pluto has a moon. There is another, yet unnamed, KBO that has a moon -- I believe it's 2003 EL61. There is a tiny asteroid in the asteroid belt that has a moon.

Who is "they" and how would this information hose them?

So instead of the object being a Cylon (sort of), it's now actually a Vorta.

That was meant to be mildly humorous. Makes keeping with the tradition of naming a moon with the spouse's (gender equity and all) first initial, if there's no spouse.
