Default Autumnal Equinox this Saturday

On Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, 4:03.4 UT, the sun crosses the celestial equator, from north to south; this marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
At the autumnal equinox the sun is above the equator, and night and day are of equal length
The Sun enters the zodiac sign of Libra at 4:03 UT.

Leaf raking will start on Sunday, Sept. 24.

For me, that is just after midnight Friday night. My daughter wants to stay up for it. I'm not sure I'm going to be awake for it.

OK, the Sun is entering Libra, and the season is changing.

I use the autumnal equinox to have students find east and west in their house (or lawn). Find a window blind on east side of house, and wherever it casts its light at sunrise on Sept. 23 is due west.

I like simple demonstrations of astronomical events, people remember these things for years.

In local news, it snowed in the hills around the house yesterday. 6 days before it was 90 degrees F. What is this Autumn I keep hearing about? Is that like somethign that comes between summer and winter?

I remember autumn. It's a season that seems to be confined to the coasts.

Is this the time of year when you can balance an egg on its side?

Default Jantar Mantar Observatory

The relevance of the historic Jantar Mantar Observatory here will once again come to the fore as Nehru Planetarium in association with Park Hotel and the Archaeological Survey of India organises a public event in the Capital this Saturday -- which happens to be Equinox Day -- to check out the calibration markings on the grand old monument.

A panel of experts from the academic community will be present to give their advice on the future directions to be taken for restoration of the Jantar Mantar Observatory.
