Would the event horizon be a visible (ie. a black... hole) sphere or would light around it (near horizon) be bent and cover it up?

Eitherway, wouldn't all that matter / plasma flying around the accretion disk mask the region?

ps. I'm just trying to sound scientific even though I've no scientific knowledge whatsoever.
