Default Biggest telescope being built

OK, what is the largest telescope actually under construction? Not some fancy design with pretty paintings, but really being made at a specific location?

I believe it's some radio telescope consisiting of an array of dishes. Large Area Telescope? The name eludes me this morning, not enough caffiene.

The largest optical telescope currently being built is the Giant Magellan Telescope. It consists of seven 8.4 mirror segments meaning its total resolving power will be that of a 24.5 m telescope. The first mirror segment is currently under construction.

Have a look here. The list was last updated in July of 2006.

Arecibo is the largest single-aperture radio dish:

The OWL concept was scrapped after a review panel decided it was too costly and risky. ESO is now planning to build a 30 or 60 m telescope.

We should be wary. We know the dangers of trying to build the biggest. The best is not always the biggest.

Let's see...on that list, I have visited Keck, Gemini North, ARC 3.5meter, SDSS telescope, the HET, the VLA, the GBT, Palomar 5 meter, the Mayall, the Kitt Peak 2.1 meter, the Bok telescope, the Yerkes Refrator, and the WIYN 3.5 meter.. I have been invited to visit the Subaru next time I am in Hawaii by someone I have gotten to know at NOAJ.

Lots of amazing facilities.
