EST or EDT?

The STEREO mission rocket lifted off from Canaveral at 08:52 PM EDT.

Don't apologize, anyone who has seen a liftoff at night was just as astounded as you were. They are really spectacular things, especially if you're not expecting them.

You did the right thing. You saw something unusual, spectacular and asked around. Others in your place might have, instead, sat right down and wrote a book about their seemingly supernatural experience.

The world would be better off if there were more of you and less of them.

I agree 100%

If you did not know this was happening, you cannot be blamed for any thoughts that went through your head!!!

I'm just jealous. There was a shuttle launch that lit up the entire eastern seaboard some years ago, but I was still inside working and missed it.

Several years ago, a shuttle re-entry went right overhead. Unfortunately, I could not break free from work in time to see it, but I was able to get outside in time to see the bright orange trail it left in the sky!

Go outside on Dec 7 and you'll see another as the shuttle lifts-off. Night launches are spectacular, even from Palm Beach.

I'm just a few miles north of you near Stuart and I can watch the launches nearly anytime they go up if you know where and when to look....

I witnessed a Russian satellite re-entering the Earth's atmosphere many years ago driving on I-37 in Texas at around 11pm. People were pulling off the side of the interstate to gawk at the unknown item on fire with a tail of smoke that went from the horizon to just above and in front of us. I originally thought that it was a jet on fire....but didn't find out until about 3 days later when the news reported what it actually was. The item was visible in all of Texas and into Oklahoma. (I wish I would have had my camera with me)
