Default Upcoming Lunar Eclipse

Will there be a lunar eclipse available Thursday night around 9:00 pm in Sacramento CA? I hear there will but can't find out for sure. I would like to clue my HS math students in.

Thanks

Mike

About 2030 PDT I reckon. At least it's 0430 BST the next morning.

Thanks for reminding me. For some reason, I got the impression it was the following morning. That would've been harsh.

Welcome to the board.

Not only in Sacramento, where it will be seen just after sunset - at moonrise. South America will also get a good view. Moon might appear red and Mars-like.

Sometime earlier this year, January 22, 2003, I believe I saw the moon take on a very distinct red colour. It was visible in Southern Ontario at least from 10PM to 10:30. I can't find this date listed as a solar eclipse like the one coming up on Thursday, so does anyone know what this might have been?

The US Naval Observatory Lunar Eclipse computer is here.
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/LunarEclipse.html

The NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center page with an excellent map is here.
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclips...2003May15.html

A slightly confusing map in Adobe .pdf format of the eclipse is here.

The moon can sometimes look red when low on the horizon opposite of the rising or setting sun. Also possible to take on a different color due to excess dust or smog in the air.

Welcome to the board quickcup. However, it's going to be just a lunar eclipse, not as exciting as a solar eclipse. Everybody makes the same mistake once in a while.

Lunar eclipses are as rare as solar eclipses, but most of the people on the planet can see each lunar eclipse, whereas only the people who are within a small band can see total solar eclipses.

That map is for the Annnular Solar Eclipse later this month.

I might question your definition of "most" in this. Nobody in Asia can see this lunar eclipse, can they?

And people in my area will miss this one because we will be overshadowed by a huge rain storm.

And you'd be right to do so. I should have said most of the planet should be able to see each lunar eclipse, as a lunar eclipse is visible from almost half of the Earth, and it's visible to more as the planet turns during the eclipse--but if that half of the Earth is the Pacific, then it's mostly water and not highly populated.

Same for Dallas :-( And I was all excited after listening to Phil talk about the eclipse on the 2nd hour of his coast to coast interview.

Well, it's not looking good here (Chattanooga) either. And that's a shame; I'd been looking forward to this one for a while.

I long ago resigned myself to the fact that any eclipse, transit, planetary alignment, or meteor storm on the calendar is also scheduled to be an overcast night in my area!

Hello,
first post here...

It seems that where I am the moon will be behind the trees during the eclipse...
However there will be a better lunar eclipse (as seen from Europe) on november 8.

It's overcast here now, but The Weather Channel assures me it'll clear up about 9:00pm, just in time for the eclipse.

Think I can sue them if it's still cloudy out then?

87°F with unlimited visibility. At least deserts are good for something.

Can you do me a favor? Spend an extra 5 or 10 minutes watching it for me. I'll return the favor by having an extra beer for you. You're old enough to have a beer right? If not I'll pop open a juicy or something.

Perfectly clear sky here on Planet P. I'll use the observascope to see the earthlings' moon.

The penumbra sucks!
Get to the umbra! Come on while we're young! :P

Heh... or while we're old and still alive for most of you

Mr. X, I informally hate you.

Maybe it'll clear up in the next hour and I'll get to at least see *some* of it.

Hello, hello? Is anybody there? It's 9:15 p.m. here--hey, Is the shadow supposed to come up from the bottom, or are we looking at more clouds? There's a sort of bite taken out of the bottom--clouds?

Is the shadow supposed to come in from the side?

The shadow is on the bottom. It's about ¾ covered now.

It's not quite dark here yet. More like twilight.

Things were going surprising well here, then the clouds rolled in just in time for totality. Bloody well figures. Oh, well, I enjoyed what I saw.
