Default Owning a piece of the sky?

I have seen these all over the place....

For the low, low discount price of only 49.99, you too can own a piece of the universe for all eternity. Great for parting gifts on the game show of life, anniversaries or a long lasting memory of grandma before you had to change her depends undergarmets. You may not be able to see your star in the night sky, but we promise, its real and its out there, we will even give you a star chart to prove its there....How did we get rights to sell the universe? oh, who cares, just think of the dumb smiles on the face of your mom as she finds out she owns a chunk of the sky...blah blah blah...

So, are all these frauds, scams, schmuzes for the out of luck gift giver, or are these legit ways to own a slice of space?

They are not legit!
The international astronomical 'school of thought' has no intention of ever selling the rights to the names of celestial objects.

Star Naming FAQ

Very informative and thorough.

Also, in deference to the BA, I did check www.badastronomy.com and found:

Selling Stars: I don't have anything on my website (yet) about the icky advertising practices of the International Star Registry, which used misleading tactics to sell people star names. They say you can buy a star name, and they will give you a certificate with the name on it. That much is true, but in years past they said things in their ads that were perhaps not quite as true, or were at least deceptive. This has lead to all sorts of unfortunate events, which I outlined in a chapter in my book ("Star Hustlers: Star Naming For Dummies").

This kind of bilking frequently gets mentioned.

The issue of hustlers selling properties on Luna has been mentioned here, here, here and here.

With all these stars being owned, maybe I'll start selling star insurance. The purchasers send me ¼ the prices of their stars. If a star ever explodes or burns out I reimburse the owner the full purchase price.

They are a very legit....

way of selling somebody an official looking certificate. As for actually owning a star? I think we'll have to wait until we can go to them before people can start to claim them.

I brought this up on another post, and I was shut down.
I still believe that it should legitimized.
Astronomers I assume, need funding. If they can accept funding from unorthodox sources, why not?
