When I zoom in, I see the runways marked 21L and 21R (or 03L and 03R) and 27L and 27R (09L and 09R). They looked unpaved. Then, south, there's paved runways 32L and 32R, that look much more heavily used. The two curved lines appear to each hook up with portions of the paved runways, one merging with an extension of 32L and one joining, end on, 32R. The unpaved runways are in what looks to be a dry lakebed. Are we at Groom Lake? Perhaps the spirals (they look more like partial ellipses, but I haven't measured them) are dikes or drainage systems for when the rainy season comes. Could they just be simple roads, for when they need to run around the lakebed strips? There's nothing very ominous about them to me. Is there anything their shapes suggest to you? Alien saucer landing signs? Giant sand worm burrows? What? Why would you not expect to see such in a dry lake air strip facility? Edit: and why did you pick the Astronomy section for this question about geography?

What we refer to as "Area 51" is not really named that.
It is a section of Groom Lake (a dry lake bed) that is part of Skunkworks. The only things there now are unusable. They moved the operations about 8 years ago. The reason, and this was even in the news... was because they were storing nuclear waste on the site, and employees were getting sick. There are hangars, and a runway... but that's about it. Nothing special about Area 51. Just an outdated overused military base. |
