Default The Mars500

Quote:
Starting in spring next year, a crew of six will be sent on a 500 day simulated mission to Mars. In reality the crew will remain in a special isolation facility in Russia. To investigate the psychological and medical aspects of a long-duration mission, such as to Mars, ESA is looking for experiment proposals for research to be carried out during their stay.

Yeow.

Just wait until they try the 2 1/2 year experiment--surface stay *plus* transit time.

It would be interesting to run several such missions in parallel with different sized groups and facilities to see if there is some 'sweet spot' of group size that makes things most workable.

My prediction is that they'll come out of it hating each other irreparably.

I wouldn't think so. Not if they are professionals. Also, they should each have separate responsibilities to take care of, so there shouldn't be much head-butting.

Being in the military, I've been couped up with people (just not quite that long) and it works well when there are clearly stated areas of responsibility. If you look at those awful reality shows on MTV, you see two big issues in my opinion: 1. the people are very immature. 2. they have to do everything by consensus/there are no leaders in any area of responsibility. A more structured environment should avoid a lot of that. You know, there is plenty of precedent for this. How long were sea voyages in the 17th and 18th centuries? Sometimes years.

Now, they might be tired of *seeing* each other...

Divers? Aha! There's more water on Mars than they've been letting on!

(And the soldiers will be the ones to take that water away from the lousy Martians.)
