Default Any truth to this?

My experience is that India Daily notoriously mixes fact with fiction and that where my question comes in. In this article http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/15008.asp I quote:
"The alignment of Sun, Moon and the earth on December 21, 2012 is significant because gravitational release of hidden asteroids can take place"
and "However, the probabilities go thirty times higher during galactic alignments. This means that if there is a lose asteroid in a stealth path, it can deviate from its path and come towards the earth. The biggest problem with the terrestrial science is that we cannot see these stealth asteroids till they hit us or go past us"
I have never read this anywhere. Any truth to this remark? Thanks!

I think it is pseudoscientific babbling for the sake of a story.

It's a total fantasy. India Daily is a rag run by a guy in New Jersey who caters mostly to Bollywood fans and throws in a bit of world and India news to seem more serious, then finishes off the mix with a lot of totally off-the-wall stuff.

So, not only is the publication in question as a worthy source of fact, but the particular reference is on an editorial page. I never trust editorials for facts. I only use them to gauge what people (or at least the one) tend to be thinking or hearing about a subject.

Or if it is heading for the Earth, it can deviate from its path and miss. My guess is that all things considered, the chances are about the same.

Thank you for your comments and the above list-I have seen it and I'm glad you're keeping track of the 2012 garbage, it should be a sticky as has been suggested before on this site-My question is just another of a probable long stretch of 2012 nonsense as we get closer to that year... I wonder what the next doomsyear is going to be after that????

Just a couple off the top of my head:

2013 - it has "that number" in it
2017 - eclipse

said number is a good omen in many cultures, so I am expecting 2013 to be a great year

Yeah. My dad told me Sicilians view 13 as lucky, so I've adopted it as my "lucky" number.

The only probable doomsday scenario of relevance I can think of is an asteroid impact.
While the danger from asteroid impacts is not negligible, media usually fail to report (or to stress) the calculated probability for an impending close encounter (one of the next is in 2036 Apophis, but the probability of a hit is about 1 in 40,000 - although figures vary from source to source, and that is exactly what sensational media reports have only in fine print, if at all).
The effects of any impact can be calculated here with my favorite impact calculator
http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

P.S.: One funny doomsday headline I remember 1979 or 1980, when the German tabloid BILD headlined: "THE SUN IS EXPLODING!" together with a menacingly big picture of the sun (as far as I remember). It turned out they were just reporting on a heightened solar activity along with magnetic storms which is normal for a solar maximum every 11 years.

No.

People tracking orbits keep track of all sorts of tiny factors. Here's a link to a discussion of the topic (scroll down about 2/3, to "UPDATE NOTES"). Among them:

solar wind
the effects of Jupiter's largest moons (the Galilean satellites)
galactic tide effects
solar oblateness

and so on. This particular analysis is specific to the asteroid 1950 DA, which may get very close to the Earth in a few centuries, but the overall idea is general. We already know about how much these factors affect an asteroid's orbit, so it's not as though a "galactic alignment" (whatever that is) is likely to be a surprise.

What's with all the 2012 guff? Is this when the mayan calendar ends or something to generate all the kookburger predictions? What's wrong with 2011 as a doomsday year? Doesn't anyone want it?

Yeah, my brother worked every single day during 1999, including Thanksgiving and Chrismas Day, to bring over a thousand servers (half of which he built himself) within Y2K compliance so nothing bad happened, only to hear several Directors in his company call it "all hype" as well when nothing screwed up.

I was there when the 1st MUX in Oz was Y2K upgraded by the telco. Half our customers (corporates and government type stuff) went off the air for 12 hours because 1 chip was missed on one card. Lucky it was a Sunday.
