This evening there happens to be a layer of cloud close to the horizon. As I was walking home, at just around sunset, the Sun was passing behind this and the clouds were just thick enough that I see the edges of the solar disk clearly defined and look at it steadily.
And what did I notice, looking at this? Why, that the Sun is subject to the Moon illusion! It looks very big when it's close to the horizon! This might seem like a silly thing to be worthy of a post, but it's something I'd simply never thought of before. Come to it, it would serve as a good refutation of the silly idea that the Moon illusion occurs because the Moon is actually closer to the Earth when it's near the horizon.
The bright red-orange sun shining through that layer of cloud also looked darn neat.
