The Kronos Quartet and Dr. Bob O'Dell, former lead scientist of the Hubble Space Telescope will be giving a free lecture at Vanderbilt on Thursday, March 13! Details here (you'll need to make reservations as space is limited). Then, on Friday, the Kronos Quartet will be giving a performance of Sun Rings, which is inspired by NASA images and recordings. By all means, don't miss a chance to hear Bob O'Dell. He was pretty much the guy hired to give what became the Hubble telescope credibility in the astronomical community, in the early 1970s. He was in Huntsville so early that he can talk about his boss simply as "Wernher". Aside from his work on HST (his talks often have the definitive diagrams of how the mirror testing was misdone), he has done seminal work on the Orion Nebula and played a big role in showing how much of the visible nebula is a thin skin at the evaporating edge of the dense molecular cloud.

Bob is a great guy. We had wonderful conversations when I was working on my first HST book. If you get a chance to meet him, ask him about the derivation of the word "proplyd"...
