You know those big spotlights used for advertising grand openings and such? Now imagine one a couple of kilometers away pointing, right at you. That's a nearby star. Now imagine a mosquito buzzing around it. Do you think you'll be able to see the mosquito?

Also resolution.

There are substantial OOM differences between the sizes of galaxies and planets. For starters on how well any telescope would clearly see such planetary objects, check out "Rayleigh criterion" and other related topics. Then factor in a 2.4 meter primary objective. Caution: some math involved!

Or the moon landing site or stellar disk or Mars or whatever myriad of threads on this subject have been brought up.

I would suggest a sticky, but they don't seem to work.

I like Kaptain K's explanation. It's nice and short and to the point, and should be enough.
