What exactly is the detail of this eclipse of the Galactic plane? The orbital calculation says we eclipse this point every 28,600 years? Does anyone know the details?

What you should take away from reading some, or all of those links is that the closest alignment happened some time ago, in 1998 or 1999, so the 2012 date is astronomically insignificant.

So, once a year, the Earth can get to position in its orbit in which the Sun lies approximately between the Earth and the galactic centre. That happens around the December equinox. It's been happening around the December equinox for years, and will continue to do so for years. The closest alignment was several years ago. Since the equinoxes precess with a period of 25,800 years, that the period at which this situation repeats itself. So in 12,900 years, we'll be seeing the same approximate alignment happening around the June equinox. Grant Hutchison |

on the day before this "eclipse", i suggest that everyone go running thru the streets while flailing their arms in a crazy fashion and screaming about how it's the end of the world, so everyone might as well just give you all their money and possessions.

ignoranceoceanatom,
Who are you addressing that question to? This thread is over a year old, I don't think anyone is paying much attention to it. And what "difference" are you talking about?

Well, it was a happy necro for me. I've been fielding a lot of questions regarding the "galactic alignment" this summer from visitors at work - I'm a projectionist at the local planetarium - and now I can add "The closest alignment was actually about a decade ago" to my list of reasons for people to calm down and go about their lives.

My brother Kristhophe, a recent thread created on 11 Aug with ending comments of 19 Aug, suggest that we are not completely able to measure the specific location with enough time-variance to know exactly where we are. We can measure its location....but the +/- margin of the formula ain't within a decade or two.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter......us humans aren't here to figure out certain mathmatical locations. Me, myself, and I prefer to focus on puppies and children and Wife-woman and gardening and my momma. Physically speaking, this particular location within our Milky Way is cool to think about. Interesting things, physics that is, occur at this location. If we've reached it a thousand, hundred thousand, million, blablablabla, years ago, I wonder what Earth physics stuff, if any, occured. Where is your location. I just spent a couple weeks with my three younglins and Wife-woman in the Upper, Middle and Lower Rocky Mountains. We would love to plan a trip to a Galactic Observation spot. PS. Ain't is a word. ![]()
