Default Astronaut Face Shield Damage

I remember reading an article a few years back about particles that pass through an astronauts face shield in space.

I don't remember if they were neutrons or what, but when they inspected the shields they found microscopic tears, and had pictures of such.

Is anyone here familiar with what I am referring to, and possible links to an article or pictures? I search, and come up with nohing.

Hmm.. I read that subject as 'astronaut(s) face shield-damage' instead of 'astronaut face-shield damage', and almost went directly to some other site to check what was wrong with the shuttle's heatshield

Sorry, don't remember ever seeing anything about what you mentioned.

I don't recall seeing what you mention, but I remember seeing a photo of the damage that a micrometeoroid did to one of the space shuttle windows. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of? If you Google "space shuttle window damage" and click on "Images," you should get a number of hits.

Dust and particles are a danger to anything in space.

A microscopic particle of dust moving at hundreds or thousands of mph can definitely ruin anyone's day.

NASA has a whole department studying it:

Justa... But if they're further reduced in size...then they barely are noticed.like hunting jellyfish with a BB gun. They go through and cells are repaired. You and I and everybody on board receive ~ 8-12 background cosmic ray hits per minute....and we're still reading. pete.

absolute rates depend on lattitude and body orientation to the flux, it can be higher, but the cosmic ray counter MIT farms out to let physics teachers count backgrounds has a couple of anti-coincidence plexiglas paddles covered with opaque duct tape, and hitched to photomultiplier tubes.
