So! Our galaxies will collide BEFORE our sun burns out!
WASHINGTON — Take that, Andromeda! For decades, astronomers thought when it came to the major galaxies in Earth's cosmic neighbourhood, our Milky Way was a weak sister to the larger Andromeda. No more. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LINK to rest of story http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...y/Science/home |

Bigger? Size, density, weight, etc... (this time, mass it seems)
It seems like these two sisters keep up thier family squabble. The Milky way gets bigger: When did the milky way get bigger again??? Andromeda gets 3x bigger: Andromeda Galaxy 3x bigger than thought And bigger yet: The Andromeda Galaxy: Even Bigger Than You Thought I really wish that they would concentrate on what technologies they used and how they differed. I am interpreting that this is the first time the speed was determined by change in position rather than using red-shifts. Quote:

I could never remember which was bigger. Maybe I was in denial.
