Default It's all a matter of perspective...

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share this video capture with you guys because I do think this is
a classic as it teachs us to always remember that perspective & timings can play tricks on us.

The following video capture was taken in Japan by a ccd camera connected to UFOCapture software and it is displayed in real time :

Reprocessed with UFOAnalyzer V2 V2.24b : http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...opa73/snap.jpg

Since I am only an amateur astronomer and I have not much knowledge in meteors, I did submit this video to some people who could help and we & they basically reached a consensus, here it is :

Hi Christophe,

I (also as an amateur astronomer) think you're right... On the
compound picture you can see the path of the "insect" continue
downward, while the meteor appears in a nice and straight line.

If meteors could be drunk, I think they'd look like this though...
Seeing that with still a bit of a hangover from the newyear's
celebrations is a bit confusing :-)

Cheers,

Hope you liked it.

Cheers,
Buck

Since I can't view Youtube videos from this computer, and other people may be in the same situation, could you please give a brief description of the clip and your conclusions, and perhaps the consensus of the IMO people? Thanks.

Hi there,

The consensus was reached within the IMO and a few french amateur astronomers specialized in meteors, meteorids.

Brief description of the video capture :

Since this was filmed in Tokyo, there's a lot of light pollution as one may guess which makes any flying objects (insects, birds, bats, paper, plastic bags etc...) visible as they reflect the city lights. In this case, an insect was captured flying down from top to bottom in the FOV of the camera and as it reached the lower part of the FOV a meteor was also captured as if it was one and only event.

The addition of the two events made it look as if it was a meteor flying
in a very odd manner (not in a straigh path).

Insect + meteor (straight line)

Cheers,
Buck

What an extraordinary coincidence!
But as Freeman Dyson pointed out, million-to-one chances happen every day.

Reminds me of the time several friends and I were out in a dark park looking for a space shuttle pass. Why? I don't know. We had the coordinates and time and all 6 of us were staring into the sky, straining, waiting... when a huge meteor came right out of where we were looking. Five of us go, "Wow! Oh, look at that! Meteor!"

One, the perpetually clueless, unobservant or unlucky one says, "What? Where?"

"There!"

"Where?"

"Too late."

We all did see the shuttle seconds later.

That's a great image/clip comparison.

That is a pretty cool clip, thanks for sharing. The first time I watched it, I was a bit confused but after your explanation I can see where the insect dropped down and the meteor came into play.
