"... the Advance Technology Solar Telescope [proposed sites] were narrowed to three...Haleakala, Maui; Big Bear Lake in California; and La Palma in the Canary Islands near Spain... once the site is selected in late 2004...[will be] the world's largest ground-based solar optical observatory..."

I've been to Haleakala and it was midday and very cloudy.....

La Palma would make more sense.

Big Bear lake is nice. They already have a small solar observatory there, that is, if it survived the fires.

I'm sure there are sound scientific reasons for the three finalists all being outstanding vacation spots.

South Pole Station (or perhaps Dome C) might be a good place for it. Of course you'd want one for the Norther Hemisphere too, but having 24 hour coverage for a good fraction of the year would be handy for some types of observation.

I wonder what fraction of the time the skies are clear from the mountains near Cape Bridgman in the North tip of Greenland.
