I'm very likely going to attend some lectures next tuesday given by several persons. Two of them are the (one and only) Dutch astronaut Wubbo Ockels and former Administrator of NASA Daniel S. Goldin. They will be talking about the future of spacetravel and especially about spacetourism. I think it's going to very interesting. I'll let you guys know how it was.

Please do. Dr. Ockels should be interesting. He was a member of the Spacelab D-1 crew in 1985.

Hey Chip. Are you from Holland or do you just have an excellent memory?

Not from the Netherlands. I guess I have a selective excellent memory. I'm also aware of some of Holland's contributions to the world -- in the arts, science, philosophy, design, etc...Many important scientists in history spent some time in, or studied in Holland. Well I went to Delft today to listen to the lectures and I have to say it was really interesting. Especially Dr. Ockels and Dr. Goldin were great speakers. Goldin was talking about the importance of space exploration and the motto of his speech was not to be afraid to fail. Ockels talked about the importance of making young people more enthousiastic about a career in science. He also talked about how we should use the moon as a basis (and base) for further space exploration. There was also a woman who represented the 'Space Adventures' company, but that was far too idealistic for me .

When the students were given the opportunity to ask questions, a male student asked Dr. Goldin how he thought the available money should be devided between manned and unmanned spaceflight. Goldin answered: 'There is no such thing as manned spaceflight; it's called human spaceflight. The time in which a man was superior to a woman is over.'

I was about to respond "Oh, brother," to this, but perhaps it should be "Oh, sibling"?

Hey, Grapes, if you're reading this - if it's okay to use "centrifugal force" even though it's not a force, is it okay to say "manned spaceflight" when some of the crew are women?

You're under two misapprehensions there: one, that I think centrifugal force is not a force, and two, that I don't read everything.

From now on, I will call it centrifictional force, but still consider it a force. How's that for a compromise?

Apparently the days when "Man" could mean humanity are over as well. I don't know why some people are so keen on forced linguistic revision.

If someone has a gun to your head over there, xriso, just nod slightly, and say the codeword. I'll be right over to save you. We've got to stand up and support each other.

It's called "POLITICALLY CORRECT". Sh-h-h-h-h! Be very, very careful what you say. You may offend someone.

First, centrifugal force is not a force, but is another word meaning *inertia* (which is not a force, but is the ABSENCE of a force).

Second, obviously you do not read everything, or you would have read about that somewhere (such as in dictionaries of physics).

Third, whatever...

Obviously. But when I did google on dictionary of physics to find entries on the centrifictional force, I did find this link, which says that the centrifugal force is required in a non-inertial system. So, everybody knows what it is, and what it means.
