Default Meteor fall in Latvia(?)

http://en.rian.ru/world/20091026/156588612.html
Quote:
No one was injured after a meteorite fell near a small town in northern Latvia on Sunday, local Latvian media reported.

According to media reports, the meteorite fell near a residential house on the outskirts of Mazsalaca town in the Valmiera district of Latvia, leaving a crater of some 20 meters (66 feet) in diameter and 10 meters (33 feet) deep.
Hmmm... Until now I've a fishy feeling about that news, as only little report is found on the web about it.

Wont be able to provide english translations for all news, but so far:

Pictures from site - night time, moments after crash - http://foto.delfi.lv/show_original/959618/

Video - http://foto.delfi.lv/show_original/959618/

And some more photos, later time, some are taken today - http://foto.delfi.lv/show_original/959618/

Now its confirmed that there are slightly higher radiation level in the middle of hole, was noticed some sulfuric odour. At the moment are just one witness, who heard noise like falling airplane and later saw fire column in the field. Noone else had reported seen, felt or heard something.

From initial reports about 20 meters wide and some 15 meters deep crater, now its reduced to some 3 meters deep and less than 15 meters wide.

Some geologists are working at site, so I hope some realible information will be added later. At the moment its hard to tell if its related to meteorite or not.

Supposedly a video of the crater. Pretty spectacular if genuine.

A crater 20 Meter across would have made headlines around the world I'd imagine. So right now I am filing this one under the "National Enquirer" section

Moonians sending a message back?

Actually, I've seen this reported in a national newspaper here too, very cool if genuine.

It doesn't surprise me. Meteorites that size hit earth in a land area probably once every few decades or slightly more. It's not that big maybe 2 meters And the frequency is, for the larger ones, very rare:
Asteroid diameter (meters)
Frequency of earth impact
Expected damage

100
Once every 1,000 years
Would damage an area the size of a city or cause a moderate tsunami in ocean

1,000 (1 km)
Once every 100,000 years
Would damage an area the size of a state or cause a large tsunami in ocean

10,000 (10 km)
Once every 100 million years
Would create a dust cloud that would encircle earth and cause a “nuclear winter”

To add to dmr81's post:

BA Blog: Latvian meteorite impact: fake

Quote:
And that turns out to be the case: geologists from Tartu University confirmed the crater is not from an impact, and they even found shovel marks around the edge.

Here is a BBC article about it as well. Looks like a fact from the sounds of it.

Well that was not even a half-hearted attempt at making it believable. Clearly it was only intended for the masses...a.k.a. Youtube

Demoting from "National Enquirer" status to Bre-X like junk.
