Default APOD: The Average Color of the Universe

I found today's APOD rather interesting:

APOD 2009 November 1 - The Average Color of the Universe

I'm pretty sure that we've discussed the color of the universe on this board before (IIRC, at the time, the astronomers thought it was greenish, but then they found their error).

Interesting, hhEb09'1.

Ah, here it is: What color is the universe?

In that thread's OP (10 Jan 2002), the question of the title is answered "green"

I was waiting for the picture roughly one minute.

LOL, dhd40. I must confess that for a few seconds when I first saw the image, or lack thereof, I was momentarily perplexed too.

It's pretty mean of the authors, since the APOD layout really invites to first look at the image, think about it, and then read the description. Cosmic latte, cute.

Is APOD having bandwidth problems? They're deliberately picking smaller size images to post?

So the Universe is slightly pink...

Still no picture. I thought I saw some pink but it was the insides of my eyelids.

Yeah, I waited a minute too. The problem is, the color of the universe is almost exactly the same as the background of my browser. So is this evidence that the universe really is a computer?

Well, if the Universe is your computer, wouldn't that make you...

Is the cosmic latte spiked?

I'd like to see their blended net spectral irradiance data.

I am dubious of their beige result when I read this..."The change in colour over six billion years from pale turquoise to beige is similar to the colour of the sky at sunset."

It seems unlikely turquoise would have ever been a net color. Green does not seem to be favored in any near Planck distribution.

Is there a paper on this?

Now I see it. The insides of my eyelids were more impressive.

Perhaps they would add more color to their work if they pointed out that space itself is blue. [For the same reason our sky is blue, so should space be, but it is too weak to notice.]
