Great - and good to know the term 'new moon' here is really used for a new moon by at least one person. Looking at various western almanacs etc has been generally confusing for their use of the term for the day or two before, in fact what should be termed no moon, or the dark moon, since that is when an eclipse can occur; however I suspect they did use 'new moon' to connote no moon.

Your definition of New Moon is a colloquial one, not a scientific one. Every astronomical definition of New Moon that I've ever seen is the Moon at the start (day 0) of a new lunation when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun in eclipitc longitude and the near side is not illuminated, and is therefore invisible.
