Hi All,
Well our DIRAS Observatory Team has been busy again, J.Chumack, L. Venter, A. Rosner Last month I led our Team to capture some nice Data on 9p/Tempel1 during Deep Impact, ....... http://www.galacticimages.com/astronomical_events.html Well now we have captured the New 10th Planet or KBO, (2003 UB313) is out beyond the orbit of Pluto in the Kuiper Belt. It is faint and required a long F.L. & exposure on a sensitive FLI CCD to detect. We measured ~18.9 maginitude. We are simply waiting on a decision from the IAU on its final Name,..... Xena is what it is currently called, but Xena is not the official name, the IAU needs to approve and announce the discovery teams secretly proposed name. Here is our Image of the 10th Planet, although they claim it is larger than Pluto, and located at twice the distance of Pluto, that is still being determined. It is a very faint object, but we were able to see it with an 8 minute exposure on the 7/31/05 and 10 minute exposure on 8/1/05 Using a .30 meter FL. 11.9 Takahashi Dall-Kirkham Scope & Software Bisque ParaMount & FLI CCD, Attached is a pair of images showing movement from one night to the next against the background star field. Below is our link to a page that will be dedicated to the New Planet……there is a short animation showing movement…. Arnie finished the calibrations, I just finished the Astrometry, and LV is still working on the Photometry on all our UBVRI images and we will update the page shortly, so keep checking back. http://mak-newt.com/visitors/MPEC2005-O41:...B313/index.html Best Regards, John Chumack DIRAS Team Leader Chumack Observatories MPC#838 http://www.galacticimages.com New Mexico Skies Observatory MPC#H06 http://www.arnierosner.com

Xena was just an internal code name the discoverers used for it. They've suggested an official name to the IAU and won't tell anyone what it is until it get approved, but they claim it will follow the current naming convention of creation mythology. In the thread in the Q&A forum we seemed to have settled on Rupert.

Nice shots.
An amateur from Brisbane Australia also grabbed some images. See his shots here on IceInSpace: http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthr...read.php?t=3274

At home, we have a small, white, roundish, low-density, fluffy toy, about 2 years old...called Rupert - I haven't told him yet about our name for 2003 UB313 - I think he'd blush
we also have a new nephew (about 8 weeks or so) called Rupert I haven't told him yet...either ![]()
