Default IC405 Flaming Star Nebula in Auriga

I posted a hydrogen-alpha version of this nebula on Sept 19, 2005. Here is the color version. It is an amazing nebula complex. The reflection nebula near the center appears so surreal.

A higher resolution version is here:

Thanks for looking. Comments and criticisms welcome.

The brightest star in the lower-left corner of the high-resolution image appears to have a red X centered on it (a very flattened X at a slight clockwise angle). Is this visible in other images or simply an artifact in this one? I don't see it around any of the other stars in the image, so I don't think it's a diffraction artifact (oh, you're using a refractor, so that couldn't be it anyway). If it is in other images, what are we seeing?

Yes, I have too much time on my hands.

Thanks,
Derrick Baumer

I believe these are small internal reflection spikes.

Amazingly beautiful, Tom.

Ad so many people look at APOD (and hey, people who visit APOD also visit Bad Astronomy).

I'm looking at my November Sky & Telescope right now, you know the gallery in the back where readers send in their photos? Hope to see one of yours there.

(Hasn't Shahriar Davoodian posted a photo here? That name looks familiar. There's a moon pic in there.)

He had already posted it, which is why I recognized his name in the magazine. See my comment here Lunar pictures . I found the thread started by Slotdrag where Shahriar posted this particular photo and it is the same one as in the magazine, but it's just upside down from his photo here. Does he know that it's in the November magazine? Please let him know--it's always fun to have your picture and blurb in a well-known magazine. I love the photos readers send in, but they must get a lot. August's issue had a very cool sun photo by some guy Gary Palmer, btw.

OK, back to Tom's gorgeous photo....
