Default Jupiter - 05/05/06

Here's my first set of jupiter images, taken last night around 11.30 pm.

All were taken through my 4.5 reflector using a ToUCam Pro II.

The first is a composite of two images, one exposed to get jupiters detail, the second overexposed to pick the four galilean moons.

The second and third were taken using a 2x barlow.

All were 10 fps 500 frame avis stacked and processed in registax and tweaked in photoshop.

Enjoy!

I'm always impressed as to how distinct the cloud formations appear. Very nice!

Mainframes, those are very nice, and I was hoping someone would get a shot of Jupiter and it's moons as they were last night here in New England. At about 8:45 p.m. EDT, the moons looked just like that and from my vantage point on High Island in the Thimbles*, Jupiter was very bright hanging over Money Is., even casting light on the water. To the south, the half moon glowed with the odd crisscrossings of contrails due to the heavily traveled NY to Boston flight patterns. Jupiter's moons were easy to see with 12x63 binoculars (no tripod) and when I got home, the Jovian planet was conveniently positioned in view from our porch door. The night got a bit cloudy, though I could clearly see Antares's twinkling as well, and the Big Dipper was very clear through a patch of clouds. Really a beautiful night--I should get a telescope sooner than later so I can see Jupiter's storms.

Thanks for sharing!!

*That Wikipedia entry needs some serious help! Will do that later.
