Default Aurora - 1st Night of Autumn

An auroral display from Culloden Observatory car park at 2230h to 2330h BST on the first night of autumn. There were two distinct pale green bands arching from the north-west to the north-east with groups of very bright "searchlights" appearing regularly. You can also see some reddish-purple streaks which were not visible to the naked eye. The stars of the Plough can be seen in the top left and bright Capella with its companions in Auriga can be see on the right.

Image was taken with Coolpix 5700 piggy-backed to motor-driven Meade LX50 telescope (20 seconds, ISO 200, f2.8, wide-angle teleconvertor) and processed with Photoshop CS.

Cheers

Eric

Beautiful stuff, Eric. I really have to travel north to have a look at that in person.

I've only ever seen one aurora (coincidentally the night of the very first shuttle launch), and that was just a strange color in the sky. I really want to see a "proper" aurora someday.

That night was my 1st night out with my telescope and I saw that aurora too. I certainly wasnt expecting an aurora at this point in the suns cycle. I saw another one a few days later.

I live in Fraserburgh, just along the coast from you Reckless. BTW I did live in Conon Bridge about 10 years ago. I was married to a local lassie. Im not mentioning names though as she will hunt me down and remove the remains of my manhood in some odd satanic ritual. Conon Bridge was beautiful and the locals very friendly (Except for the one I married)

I once made the mistake of "going for a quick pint" one hogmany at lunchtime with the locals. By Jove they cant half get you drunk quick
