Default Double Iridium Flare captured April 12, 2007

Hi Guys - I had planned to capture a -6 Magnitude Iridium flare tonight, and really wanted to get the whole thing in a single image. I had set my camera to 1 minute exposure at f/8, ISO 800, 26mm focal length. I timed the start of the flare based on data from www.heavens-above.com and had set the remote shutter to take 3 images. The first image had no flare data, but the second one had the expected flare. I let the remote fire the third shot, as I had planned to stack the 3 images to decrease the digital noise level. Somewhere around 15 seconds into the third shot, I noticed a shorter, lower magnitude flare below the area of the main flare. I have no idea which Iridium satellite this is. The heavens-above website indicated only one flare, Iridium 43, and it was at the exact time they had predicted. I guess I'll have to search for this one.

The attached picture is a combination of the 3 individual shots, for a total of 3 minutes exposure time; each image was taken at f/8 and ISO 800. Images combined by Image Stacker; processing, cropping and text frame done in PhotoShop CS, and noise filtering done in Neat Image.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Clear skies!

Paul

Fantastic shot, Paul. Could the second one possibly be a small meteorite?
