Default Jupiter and all 4 moons in hi-res

Hi all

This is one of the most ambitious imaging projects I'm likely to do for a while. Attached is 1 image showing Jupiter with her 4 galilean moons, Callisto, Europa, Ganymede and Io - all at the same scale in hi-res.
I've got approx 6 runs like this and will animate them when I get time to process the rest of the moons.

Due to the FL of capture (10,386mm), none of the moons were in frame (640x480 capture window) when Jupiter was the target, but if I centered on the closest moons on each side, then the edge of Jupiter could still be seen. This allowed me to create the accurate composite showing the moons in their true position at the time.

Each moon had its own run through registax. The channels were aligned and combined in AstraImage, and the composite was made in Photoshop.
There's detail present on both Ganymede and Callisto. I purposely kept processing of the moons to a minimum. After stacking, there's only very mild wavelets and no other processing except for levels and curves in photoshop.

Be sure to expand the image when your browser resizes it.

Thanks.

Wow! I believe that is the best amateur image of Jupiter I have seen.

That is fantastic iceman!

Io seems non-circular - any idea what's going on there?

Also, if I may make a suggestion: can you find appropriate maps of Ganymede and Callisto (or images), from the same viewing angle, and put them into a little insert? Perhaps even a little blow-up insert? It'd be really cool to see the correspondence between the surface details in your image!

Hi Mike,

Incredible work as usual, Just Awesome!

I may have to move to Australia to get your excellent seeing conditions!

I just made the investment today in the DMK camera, so I hope to give it a shot this summer. Man you are giving us all the Planet catching Fever!

Keep up the incredible work!!!!

Thankyou very much for your nice words. I'm still working on data from that night and hopefully the animation will be something special. It's a shame though it will only be over 6 or 7 frames. Io was getting too far away from Jupiter, and I wanted some sleep to be able to get up for Mars and the moon the next morning
