Default Earth's Moon, May 29th, 2007

Hi guys – here are a couple of images I took of our Moon on May 29th, 2007.

For the Moon Terminator image: Camera – Canon 20D mounted in prime-focus configuration; Telescope – Meade 5” AR5 achromat refractor, 1180mm f/l, f/9.3; Mount – Losmandy G-11 Gemini. This is a mosaic of two image sequences captured using a programmable remote shutter release, with mirror lock-up disabled. A total of 667 images were captured – 351 for the “right” side, and 316 for the “left” side. Images were taken at 1/60th-second exposure at ISO 800.

For the “Almost Full” moon image: Camera – Canon 20D mounted in prime-focus configuration; Telescope – Meade Series 5000 80mm APO refractor, 480mm f/l, f/6.0; Mount – Losmandy G-11 Gemini. Images were captured using a programmable remote shutter release, with mirror lock-up disabled. A total of 328 images were captured at 1/125th-second at ISO 100.

The two sets of original images were then imported into RegiStax 4.0 for processing. The “left” and “right” final images from RegiStax were then assembled into a mosaic using the software program AutoStitch. Frame work was done with Noel Carboni’s Astronomy Tools plug-in for PhotoShop CS.

Questions, comments and critiques welcome!

Clear skies!

Paul

Paul,

Nice work. I like the stretched colors in the second shot.

Very nice colors & sharpness.

You did 328 shutter acquisitions on your 20D? Dang

Hi Andy, Efrain, and Ingo - thanks for the nice comments!

Yeah, and that was just for the "single image" of the almost full Moon. There were over twice that many for the two separate image sequences taken for the mosaic. I wonder how much "life" I zapped out of my camera by taking about 1,000 images in rapid sequence over such a short period of time. I think the shutter life expectancy is only around 100,000 exposures.

Thanks again, guys!

Clear skies!

Paul
