Talking Widefield Milkyway

Hi all

I took this shot on Saturday the 15th September, at our new moon meetup at Kulnura, on the Central Coast of NSW.

Canon 350D + Sigma 17-70mm lens @ 25mm, f/4.0, ISO1600. On an EQ6,.
5 x 300s exposures, Camera ICNR on, mirror lockup on.

The 5 lights were rotated (bad drift alignment) and stacked (average) in Images Plus. Processing in Photoshop adjusted saturation, curves and levels.

I'm really happy with how this turned out, it's probably my best widefield milkyway shot so far.

The Milkyway Galaxy

Thanks for looking.

Great image! Great shots do not require long focal length, that's for sure.

When I was in Australia and New Zealand the winter of 2006 (yours) the Milky Way was very impressive with the center of the galaxy nearly overhead. At 47N where I live it is very low and in the gunk. It was cloudy the whole time I was in the outback but cleared when I got to New Zealand and finally saw the dark sky in July. My eyes didn't see it quite like your image however! I can only wish they could have.

For some reason my default DNS couldn't find your website. Kept telling me the server was down. Since others saw it I put in a different server and now I can see the picture. I don't know what the problem is with my system's default server. Are others having this problem or only my ISP's DNS server?

Rick

Thanks very much for your nice comments.
I've wanted to capture an image like this for a long time. My previous best effort was this one, captured at the South Pacific Star Party in April this year.
