Default Clouds on Venus - first light Schuler UV filter

Hi all

This image was taken on the morning of the 30th December, and is the first light for my new Schuler UV filter, which helps to reveal cloud structure on Venus.

It's a challenge in capturing and more practise is needed (especially in processing), but i'm happy with it.

Thanks for looking.

Nice UV shot of the clouds.

If you're interested in some different presentations, try using UV for the lum & blue, with R & G in a false color image. You can really show the clouds (but at the expense of some weird color combos).

Hi Mike, Another fine photo of Venus, Nice cloud band structures and details. What was your Gain setting and F stop on the Newt?. Very Impressive and nice presentation. Clear Skies

Thanks guys, and thanks Robert for the tip - I was wondering how to do the false colour processing. I'll give that a try.

Efrain - the gain was probably at maximum. The UV filter cuts down the available light significantly, so I used 1/15s exposure (15fps) and the histogram was only half exposed.

I used a 5x powermate (for the big image), and combined with the extension, is giving me about 6-6.5x - so my f/5 newt is turned into f/30 or so.

Here is a false colour, with the channel assignments as Robert suggested.

I like it! Thanks Robert.

You might also try some other color combos.

I did one were the planet has the usual yellow appearance, but the (UV) clouds are purple. I saw another version, on one of the ALPO sites, that has the planet blue, with the (UV) clouds red (it really showed the clouds, if you can tolerate the wierd colors).

You may find a really appealling false color combo that shows the Venusian clouds, if so, many of us would like to copy the approach.

Thanks Robert, i'll try some others.

Do you use an IR-pass filter for Venus? Which one is best?

I've seen some IR-pass/UV combos that look nice.

I've not tried any IR on Venus. I use it (742nm) all of the time on Mars, but have only done LRGB & UV (Schuler) on Venus. I'll give it a try next time I take a shot. Please post if you get a nice image that shows the cloud layering contrast

A great series. I am afraid all of the planetary filter talk is above my head at this stage. My favorite is the original 2X. Nice sharp definition.

Kind regards
Matt
