Default Mars on New Year's Eve

With the new computer finally working in the observatory and a new DMK color camera, clear skies on New Year's eve gave me the opportunity to gather some data.

I had tried on December 30th, but the seeing was poor at best. On the 31st, it was fair. This shot is from the first sequence I took that night, as seeing deteriorated as it got later. By the time Mars transited around 11pm, it was just a blurry ball.

This image is about 800 of 2000 frames, taken at 15fps / 1/15 sec exposure. It was taken with a C-11 and a 4x Powermate, for an effective 11,200mm focal length. I stacked in Registax, using gaussian wavelets on a dyadic setting for initial sharpening. I further processed the image with selective wavelets and an image mask in PixInsight, final touch-up was in Photoshop.

It's not quite prime time, but it's a reasonable shot.

Hi Andy.
Nice image. I have yet to get out and do some filming. Our weather has been cloudy for a few months now and very cold, I hope to get out soon.
Clear skies to you. Paul

Matt- Thanks!

Narender, I just hope to have time to image. Work will take me to your part of the world -- Hyderabad, Bangaluru and Pune later this month. A good trip, but I won't me imaging...
