Default Mars - 1st attempt

link

Well, it's not much.

My telescope is definately not meant to take pictures of planets with my current setup, but I tried it anyway.

Hi Siguy. Is there any way to enlarge the image? I clicked download but got the same image as your thumbnail image. Actually, as a first attempt, I would not rate it as too bad. At least its round, appears reddish and has hints of structure. The seeing may have been as big a factor as the equipment or technique. I think you've established a benchmark and now with the expertise of these guys on this forum they should be able to help you achieve the next level. You're on your way.

(I'm still trying to figure out what I need to start.)

Thanks for sharing it with us,
-Veeger

If I am not mistaken, you are using a fairly fast short focal length scope so this effort is nothing to apologise for. Did you try a barlow? How many images did you take to compile this one? What camera did you use?

Kind regards
Matt

I don't have a barlow, only a prime focus adapter. The scope's focal length is 762mm. It only was one exposure of about a 200th of a second or something with an 8 megapixel Canon 350d. As I said, I don't have the proper setup. But the scope compensates for horrible planetary imaging by awesome deep sky imaging.

I don't even have the right eyepieces for looking at it. Through the eyepiece it seemed like a very wavy orange dot, so the seeing was probably pretty bad. This was the best of two images.

Hey, it's red, it's a planet, it's Mars!

We should all always look up and see what we can see. And if we are so inclined, we should image!

Don't stop trying. This is fine.
