Default Young Thin Crescent Moon , Earthshine, & Snow Storm 2008

Hi All,

After shovelling snow out of my driveway all day, with no end in site, the blizzard conditions finally gave way to clear skies, Yeah!

I went out to check out how clear it was, and saw this young thin crescent moon with Earthshine as I looked down my street on Mesmer Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. We usually don't get this much snow in southern, Ohio!

Canon 20D DSLR & 75mm to 300mm lens, set on a tripod, ISO 400, 2 second exposures.

I also captured some small Ice pillars to the right of the closeup shot, due to the wind blowing snow causing Ice crystals to refract the light into these small pillars.

I tired uploading pics here, but it would not take, so here is a link to the pics.

Beautiful shot with all that snow. But it means the 7th new moon in a row lost to clouds here. We need snow but get flurries and constant clouds. Clear by day but cloudy by night. Winds high keep all that snow moving. Drifts my road closed even without new snow.

I live just below the snow belt and probably had 8 to 10 inches in 24 hours (drifts to 30"). Can't imagine what those folks up around the lakes are dealing with. A brutal storm.

Nice pics John. Everything looks pretty steady inspite of the winds.

we have had in NYC constant rain, the winds are very strong
It cleared up tonight, but the winds are gusting terribly and now the clouds have returned. So much for my Saturday night star gazing.

Hi John, All the photos are simply beautiful, I especially like the first one very poster like and the shadow on the moon details can be seen also. Great shot! and Clear Skies

A lovely shot. Reminds me of cold crisp post storm nights in upstate N.Y. where I grew up. Thanks for posting.

Kind regards
Matt

Very nice...the snow looks cool in the shot as well. Not a big thing, but try to avoid the power lines in shots, just looks weird in there. Thanks for sharing!

Sorry,

but it is a sad reality for us city dwellers!

I take them however the opportunity presents itself, the power line was all the way at the end of the street, so trucking down the in the snow to avoid it, was not an option, even if I had tried to avoid it, the moon would have been below the tree line anyway.
