The only thing comparable that I've seen was a thin cloud in the western sky travel eastward and turn into a major thunderstorm by the time it reached the eastern horizon. Took about three hours. This was in Kansas.

Pretty neat sequence. Lots of blue, and the clouds are distinctive enough to recognize, as the small one grows and the large one disappears.

I watch enough weather to have seen this sort of thing hundreds of times. Fascinating. Nice to get on image.

I've seen this quite often in Los Angeles. As the marine layer comes in off the coast the clouds will often be forming as they move over the higher temperature of the land. I've also seen it in the mountains as air rises into a forming cloud.
