Hi ozzmosis - my monitor must be going bad. I barely see a couple of streaks in the left side of the image.

This is a single 26-minute exposure? Man, you must have dark skies. I'm lucky if I get about 26 seconds before the sky is washed out.

Good luck with your new camera!

Paul

Hi ozzmosis - this one is much brighter. I've gone through monitor calibration, using Adobe Gamma, and I can't get my monitor any brighter. I've loaded the 18-step gray scale image, and at least the bottom 4 dark bars all look the same. Guess it's time for a new monitor, huh?

Thanks for the second image.

Paul

Hi Pascal - I'm not even using an LCD monitor. Somewhere I read they are not the "best" to use when you're using Photoshop, which I seem to live in some days. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the contrast levels are too great, like 3000:1, and if you adjust your astrophotos so they look right with an LCD, then people (like me) with non-LCD monitors won't be able to take advantage of the increased contrast, and the images won't display properly. I don't know. As far as I can tell, whenever I print any images, they seem to match very closely with what I see on the screen. Maybe my printer's dying also...bummer! My monitor at work seems to be very, very slightly brighter than my monitor here at home, but the difference is negligible. That monitor is not an LCD one either. Probably time I entered the 21st century!

Cheers!

Paul

Looks great both ways I can never get good results here... I've got an old school rebel... but plains come in over the house and go out over the house and fairly low so their under body lights usually ruins any attempt at star trails.

I have also takes some startrail pics and have planes and even helicopters fly through the frame so to speak ...I think the extra lights add character

Hi there Ozzmosis. Great start. You might want to increase your ISO a bit, I know it increases noise but it will sure increase your star count. Here is a shot of 60 seconds 50mm f/2.2 ISO 800 of an iridium Satellite with slight startrails. The second image is 30x30 seconds stacked @18mm f/4 ISO 1600 of Orion. Just go out an play around a bit. Have fun.

Well, the logic in that is that now that LCD monitors are the norm, people doing graphic design should make images that look best on LCD monitors.

I have a rather bad LCD monitor and it still is, in my opinion, better than any CRT monitor. It's sharp, easy on the eyes, and takes up so little space on my desk. I simply don't get why some people still firmly cling to their CRT monitors, like the audiophiles that claim LPs sound better than digital.

my canon 1000d/rebel xs is also about 2 weeks old and i too am experimenting with it.but i must say its an awesome camera for this price.the pics u see above were taken from within a metropolitian city with street lights and city light around.and through the naked eye not more than 20,30 stars were visible.i took them at 2o seconds exposure at ISO 800.dont forget to change the white balance to daylight mode.i too am anxious to capture the milkyway but for that i will have to travel atleast 300km.so i am waiting for the right time.till then i plan to make some time lapse videos.you have any idea when i will be able make a thread cause currently i can even send a PM to the moderator
