Default Cloudless pictures of earth?

Can you point me in the direction of photos or video footage of earth where you can clearly see the shape of countries? Whenever I watch the shuttle missions, earth is always cloud covered.

How about downloading Google Earth and exploring until your heart's content? I don't think you'll find a better, more easily navigable collection of satellite imagery anywhere...at least not for free.

It would have to be a composite. Has there ever been recorded such widespread clear weather?

Take a look here:

http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_se...ategoryID=2363

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Fea..._monthlies.php

Cloud free images are, of course, necessarily composite/processed.

It does depend on how widespread. I did find this "rare virtually cloud-free image of the UK":

(Oh, and just a thought - perhaps this topic would be better in Q&A?)

Thanks guys, I'll check out those links but yea, I've seen quite a few composites. I suppose I should have really limited my question to a request for video footage. Is there any nasa video footage you can think of where the ISS or shuttle are filming earth and where cloud cover was minimal, at least, clear enough to really make out america, UK, africa, etc? I don't know why I have this desire, I suppose I just want to see the shapes of our countries 'for real', in real time so to speak, instead of composites or atlas drawings.

I would guess it's a matter of perspective.
The composites are very interesting, but without a portion of a hatch in the way, or some movement, it's hard to get a feel for the distances or scales involved and how they relate to the resolution.

You might check out

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Fea...CitiesAtNight/

The astronauts built a barndoor tracker and photographed a number of cities at night (pretty much cloudless). Scroll down and there's a link to a video.

Hey Merlin...
I do not have a video footage / link for your request...but...

I am rather partial to this site; it is updated every three hours; follows the apparent movement of the Sun. I thought you might like to visit it.

http://www.die.net/earth/

We'd all be in serious trouble, if the skies were indeed cloudless.

edit:
now thinking about it, again...
i get nervous about making these links, in case somehow, i've hot-linked it.
the more i try to resolve in my mind, the more my head's dizzy. Dash it.

...and thanks, y'all, for some interesting links....

That was pretty cool! There's always a feeling of awe I get when seeing stuff like this from space. It really makes me realise, and not to sound too cliched, how truly small we are in the grand scheme of things
