Default Southern Milk Way Stitch

Glad to see others using the nifty fifty on a static tripod, it's a great little lens. Love your image. Here is a 9 panel stitch I did several months ago. Keep up the good work!

50mm 8 sec f/2 ISO 1600.

Well, until this week, I'd never heard of a 50mm lens referred to, as nifty-fifty. Wow!

Having used numerous different makes, over the years...
not even my Olympus 55mm f1.2 lens

So it's a 50mm lens, used in digital photography! Okay.
What's so special about it?
Pardon my question, I'm ignorant in some matters.

I see that it does take excellent photographs, details-wise...and impressive for me, because I haven't used a digital camera yet...to shoot the skies...

edit:
nice one, too rj...thanks for sharing.

I think I've heard of "nifty-fifty" for a fixed 50mm lens before. I guess it's because of the massive sphincter that baby possesses. Great for astrophotography. Also good for portraits too due to the tiny depths of field possible.

I've always referred to the 50mm f1.8 as the thrifty fifty, and the f1.4 as the nifty fifty. Nice shot though! =) Have to take mine out sometime soon!

I have just heard the Canon 50 1.8 referred to as a nifty fifty, mainly because of the undere $100 price tag, and yes it does take relatively sharp images for astrophotography as long as you can get it focused (I have a Canon 400D with no live view, always an adventure). Thanks

I'm obviously not mixing with the 'with-it' crowd.

LOL.Well, don't let this happen to your "Thrifty Fifty" lol:
http://www.pbase.com/jniemann/image/102981383

It seems I don't have much luck with my fifties. Not only did I break my thrifty fifty, but the autofocus motor on my nifty fifty (f1.4) failed, and it is currently undergoing an expensive repair. Apparently, this is a common problem (design flaw ?) with the 1.4

They are both very good lenses, though.
There is also the f1.2 (The hefty fifty ?) . However, it is hard to justify the price of the f1.2, imo. But it looks real cool on your camera

Canon also made a 50mm f1.0 at one time, too ... apparently the autofocus on that one is very slow. However, astronomers shouldn't be worried about that Perhaps the f/1.0 deserves to be called the lofty fifty ...
