I do realise there is Amazon, however that would take a while to import from the US plus you will be stung on shipping and import taxes as it would be coming from outside the EU.
I went to two bookshops today and according to one who supplies to the university locally, it is unlikely to be published in the UK for about three months. In theory they could import a copy, but that could take quite a while and the price is subject to fluctuating currencies. Can Phil find out when we will be able to get hold of his new book from UK book shops, as it would be nice to support our local bookshops. ![]()

I tried again today to get a copy of this book and still can not find it in the book shops.
One shop said they could get the hard back for £17, one suspects they would be importing, although they said it was available in the UK. I notice on the UK Amazon website in the price they refer to a US list price and then a UK equivalent. Does this mean that Amazon are still importing from the US? I asked about the paperback version, which Phil mentioned and apparently I have two heads. What has Phil's publishers got against the UK, that his second book is only available if you import it from the US. Was there some restriction meaning it can not be printed in the UK?

No, but when I looked it referenced a US list price which implied they were still importing and looking at the link for the paperback edition it is giving a delivery time of one the three weeks, a dead give away that it has to be imported from the states and therefore most likely upping the price on delivery plus possible import duties as it is coming from outside the EU.

"Months" seems about the right timeframe for English-speaking countries with enough market to do their own paperback edition. If Phil Plait knows of a schedule for your location, he'd probably share it with you upon direct request.

I have direct messaged him plenty of times on twitter and he has never gotten back to me about anything. Even a "Don't know" would be nice.

I visited Waterstones, a prominent seller of books in the UK on Friday and was told that as far as they know, there is no UK publisher of Death From the Skies. Any copy would have to be specially imported from the US and that could take several weeks, if anyone tried. They suggested Amazon, but they do not have any UK copies. You have to wait umpteen weeks, and by the sound of things pay over the odds to import a copy into the UK to cover things like customs duty and extra shipping costs.
I have sent Phil a tweet, but from what dirty_g says it seems I might not get a reply either. Phil is a busy man after all. This means from what Waterstones have said, Phil's book is unavailable in the UK and will there will never be a uk publication, and we in the UK will not be able to get a copy, unless we visit the US in person or engage the expensive services of an import company. ![]()

I've bought a few books from Amazon.UK, sometimes specifically because I wanted the British edition. It's a little more expensive, but if I can't get the book any other way, it's worth it. (And, in fact, going through Amazon.UK for one of the things I wanted ended up being cheaper than the British edition available used on the American version.)

It's quite unfortunate that we can't just paypal Phil some money and have him send it across. I've been looking for it for a while here, though I think I've just found it at one of my favourite book stores, good ol' Planet Books.
I've emailed a number of my favourite musicians in the U.S. and sent them money through paypal and had them send me their albums. I like the idea that they're getting the full cut of the profits themselves, though I am not so sure of the legal ramifications. Maybe if it were an exchange of gifts?
